Very young composers
September 2019 - May 2020
Ages 8 - 10
A program that introduces children to the fundamentals of music and composition. By drawing connections with emotions, imagination, personal experience, and other art forms, the students will acquire a foundation for further technical study in composition. The goal of this course is to empower students as they explore their own individual voice, resulting in 2-3 completed composition projects, which are workshopped, performed and recorded by professional musicians during public showings. During the first semester, students will learn how to listen deeply and critically, with creative activities designed to expand personal observations. Students will also explore mindfulness, improvisation, and intuitive music making. Over the course of the second semester, students will refine the skills they acquire during the first semester, including introductory training in music fundamentals, reading music, notation, and ear training.
Regular attendance is expected. No prior music experience is required.
